- Roulette: fixed odds, fixed payouts, 6.67% house edge on the classic 15-slot wheel.
- Crash: you choose your own multiplier; the edge is often lower but variance is higher at large targets.
- Neither game can be beaten with a system. The choice is about feel, not profit.
- Practise both in our simulators before using real balance.
Roulette and crash are the two most popular quick-fire games on skin gambling sites. Both take seconds per round, both are easy to understand in a minute, and both attract plenty of myths. Here is how they actually compare, round by round. For overviews, see roulette strategy and crash strategy.
How each game works
Roulette
You bet on red, black or green on a 15-slot wheel: 7 red, 7 black, 1 green. Red and black pay 2x; green pays 14x. One spin, one result, no decisions after you place the bet.
Crash
A multiplier starts at 1.00x and climbs until it "crashes" at a random point. You must cash out before it crashes. If you cash out at 2.00x, your stake doubles; if it crashes first, you lose the stake. You can set an auto cash-out in advance.

Side-by-side comparison
| Factor | Roulette (15-slot) | Crash |
|---|---|---|
| Decisions per round | Pick colour only | Pick stake and cash-out target |
| Win chance (typical bet) | 46.67% (red or black) | Depends on target; about 49.5% at 2x with a 1% edge |
| Max single-round multiplier | 14x (green) | Very high, but very rare |
| House edge | 6.67% | Often 1% to 4% (varies by site) |
| Pace | Fixed rounds, short wait | Fast, can be rapid with auto-play |
| Volatility | Moderate | Whatever you choose it to be |
The maths of crash in one formula
For a game with house edge h, the chance the multiplier reaches at least m is roughly (1 - h) / m. With a 1% edge:
| Cash-out target | Chance to reach it (1% edge) | Expected return per CA$1 |
|---|---|---|
| 1.50x | 66.0% | CA$0.99 |
| 2.00x | 49.5% | CA$0.99 |
| 5.00x | 19.8% | CA$0.99 |
| 10.00x | 9.9% | CA$0.99 |
| 100.00x | 0.99% | CA$0.99 |
The expected return is identical at every target; only the risk profile changes. This is why "strategies" in crash do not alter long-run results. Visualise it in the crash simulator. Check each site's stated edge since it varies.
Roulette volatility in numbers
Betting CA$1 on red each spin produces about a 46.67% win rate with a loss of roughly 6.67 cents per spin on average. Betting green wins 6.67% of the time for 14x. Over 100 spins on green, the expected number of hits is about 6.7, but 3 or 11 would not be shocking. Practise in the roulette simulator.
Which suits your style?
Pick roulette if you...
- Prefer a simple, social, low-decision experience.
- Like the community and chat feel of a shared wheel.
- Want predictable payouts of 2x or 14x.
CSGOEmpire's classic roulette is a good home for this style; see our roulette tips.
Pick crash if you...
- Like control over risk, from safe 1.3x cash-outs to lottery-style 50x.
- Prefer a lower stated house edge.
- Can stick to a pre-set target without emotion.
CSGORoll and 500Casino both offer crash alongside other games.
Common mistakes in each game
| Game | Mistake | Better habit |
|---|---|---|
| Roulette | Thinking black is "due" after reds | Treat every spin as independent |
| Roulette | Doubling after losses | Keep bet size constant and small |
| Crash | Moving the target mid-round out of greed | Use auto cash-out |
| Crash | Chasing 100x after small losses | Cap your session loss in advance |
Verify fairness: both games use provably fair seeds. See provably fair explained and how to verify a roll hash.
Bankroll tips that apply to both
- Bet 1% to 2% of your session bankroll per round. Our bankroll calculator can help.
- Set a time limit as well as a money limit.
- Withdraw wins periodically rather than leaving them to be replayed.
A 200-round comparison
To feel the difference, imagine playing 200 rounds with CA$1 bets in each game.
| Setup | Expected loss (approx.) | Typical swing |
|---|---|---|
| Roulette, red every round (6.67% edge) | CA$13.30 | Moderate; most sessions end within about CA$15 of the average |
| Crash, 2x target (1% edge) | CA$2.00 | Moderate; similar shape to roulette |
| Crash, 10x target (1% edge) | CA$2.00 | Large; long losing runs with occasional big wins |
| Roulette, green every round | CA$13.30 | Large; about 13 wins expected, with wide variation |
The comparison shows an important point: lower edge does not mean lower variance. A 10x crash target is much more volatile than betting red, even though its expected loss is smaller. Neither game rewards over-confidence. Remember that the edge on crash varies by site, so always check the published figure.
Psychology: what each game does to you
Roulette
The wheel gives you a clear result immediately, so each round feels like a fresh decision. The danger is pattern-seeking: noticing three blacks and betting red, or increasing stakes after a loss.
Crash
Crash adds a second emotional layer: the near-miss. Watching the multiplier climb past your target after you cashed out early, or crash right after you were about to, is intense. Players often raise targets in response, which increases variance and tends to cost more. A fixed auto cash-out removes the temptation to react.
Our recommendation
Whichever you pick, decide three things before you start: your stake size, your target or colour, and your stop point. Write them down, follow them, and review how you felt afterwards. The game you enjoy while staying within those rules is the right one for you.
Quick decision guide
- Want the simplest possible game? Roulette.
- Want to choose your own risk level? Crash.
- Playing with a very small budget? Either, with the smallest bets available.
- Prone to chasing losses? Choose the slower game, set auto limits and take breaks every 20 minutes.
- Curious about the maths? Run both in the simulators for a few hundred rounds and compare the shape of your results.
If you still cannot decide, flip a coin; the expected cost is similar enough that your enjoyment and discipline matter more than the choice.
Verdict
If you want simplicity and a social feel, roulette is the better pick. If you want control over your risk level and a typically lower house edge, crash is. Both lose money over time on average, so choose the one you find more enjoyable and set your limits first.
Frequently asked questions
Is crash or roulette better odds?
It depends on the site. Classic 15-slot roulette has a 6.67% house edge, while crash edges are commonly lower, often around 1% to 4%. Check the published figure.
Is crash a skill game?
The cash-out timing is your only decision. It does not change your expected loss, only the shape of your results.
Which has bigger wins?
Crash can have very large multipliers but rarely. Roulette's maximum is a fixed 14x on green.
Which is better for beginners?
Roulette is simpler to understand. Crash requires more discipline to set cash-out targets.
Can I practise first?
Yes. We offer a crash simulator and a roulette simulator with play balance.
