- Float is a number from 0.00 to 1.00 that sets a skin's wear and its exterior name.
- Ranges: FN 0.00–0.07, MW 0.07–0.15, FT 0.15–0.38, WW 0.38–0.45, BS 0.45–1.00.
- The calculator shows the tier, distance to the next boundary and the position within the tier.
- Prices are approximate and change daily; use the number as a guide only.
How to use the float calculator
Type or paste a float value (for example 0.0713) into the input. The tool returns the exterior name, how far the float is from the lower and upper edge of that tier, and what percentage of the tier's range you are through. You can also type the minimum and maximum float of a specific skin to see which exteriors it can actually drop in. Many skins have narrowed ranges; for example, a skin with a minimum float of 0.06 can still be Factory New but can never be an ultra-low 0.00x.
CS2 float ranges
| Exterior | Abbr. | Float range | Width |
|---|---|---|---|
| Factory New | FN | 0.00 – 0.07 | 0.07 |
| Minimal Wear | MW | 0.07 – 0.15 | 0.08 |
| Field-Tested | FT | 0.15 – 0.38 | 0.23 |
| Well-Worn | WW | 0.38 – 0.45 | 0.07 |
| Battle-Scarred | BS | 0.45 – 1.00 | 0.55 |
The boundaries are inclusive at the lower end and exclusive at the upper end in practice: 0.0700 is Minimal Wear, 0.0699 is Factory New. Because the tiers are unequal in width, a "mid" Field-Tested skin at 0.26 is very different from a "mid" Battle-Scarred at 0.72.
The math behind the tool
For a given float f the calculator finds the tier [a, b) that contains f, then computes:
- Distance to the lower edge: f − a
- Distance to the upper edge: b − f
- Position in tier: (f − a) / (b − a) × 100%
Example: a skin with float 0.0713 is Minimal Wear. Distance to FN is 0.0013, which is 1.6% of the MW width of 0.08, so it sits at 1.6% of its tier. That is a "high-end" MW in terms of visual wear and often sells close to Factory New prices. Another example: float 0.3790 is FT, only 0.001 below Well-Worn, or 99.6% through the tier.
Why float matters for price
Within a tier, the market tends to reward the extremes: very low FN floats (below roughly 0.01) and floats right at the top of a tier that visually look like a better tier. A premium is more likely on popular, high-value skins than on cheap ones. As an illustration, a common AK-47 FT at CA$30 might sell for CA$34 to CA$40 at 0.150 to 0.160, while one at 0.37 may only fetch CA$27 to CA$29. These ranges are approx. and vary day to day; check live listings. For deeper context see float and wear explained and low float skins explained.
Tips for using float in practice
- Check the skin's own range. Some skins cannot be FN or BS at all.
- Use inspect links. The market page shows float for individual listings through in-game inspect tools or third-party viewers.
- Pair float with pattern. For pattern-based skins (Case Hardened, Fade, Marble Fade) the pattern index often matters more than float; see pattern index and blue gems.
- Know the net proceeds. If you plan to sell, the Steam fee calculator shows what you keep after the 15% fee.
Tip: if you are doing trade-up contracts, input float is what drives the output float. Try our trade-up calculator to plan low-float outputs.
Float on gambling sites
When you deposit or withdraw skins on a P2P marketplace such as CSGOEmpire or CSGORoll, site pricing often ignores float, so a low-float item may be priced the same as an average one. That means low floats can be cheaper to buy on a site marketplace than on specialist listings, and high-float items can be a poor use of coins. Read how to deposit skins before moving valuable items, and remember that case or upgrader outcomes randomise float on the item you receive.

Frequently asked questions
What are the CS2 float ranges?
Factory New is 0.00 to 0.07, Minimal Wear 0.07 to 0.15, Field-Tested 0.15 to 0.38, Well-Worn 0.38 to 0.45 and Battle-Scarred 0.45 to 1.00.
Does a lower float always mean a higher price?
Not always. Premium is usually paid for very low floats within a tier, and for skins whose minimum float is limited by design. Many mid-range floats sell near the base price.
Can I change a skin's float?
No. The float is set when the skin is created and stays fixed, except through trade-up contracts which create a new item.
Why do some skins have a narrower float range?
Each skin has its own minimum and maximum float, so not every skin can appear in every exterior.
Is a 0.069 Factory New worth more than a 0.0699?
Both are Factory New. Collectors may pay a small premium for lower floats, but the difference is usually modest unless it is very low.
