- Rakeback = a percentage of the house edge on your wagers, returned to you.
- It lowers your expected loss, but never turns a negative-EV game into a profitable one.
- Always check what the percentage is applied to: house edge, wager or net losses.
- Run your own numbers in the rakeback calculator.
The idea in one paragraph
Every game on a gambling site has a built-in edge. On a 15-slot roulette wheel, the house takes 1/15 or about 6.67% of the average bet. The old poker term "rake" meant the cut the house kept; rakeback returns part of that cut to you. If you wager CA$1,000 on roulette at a 6.67% edge, the expected house take is about CA$66.70. A 10% rakeback on that edge gives you roughly CA$6.67 back.

Why the "up to 300%" headlines confuse people
Marketing often quotes huge numbers: 300% rakeback, 340% rakeback. These percentages usually apply to something other than your total wagers, such as a deposit match, a specific wagering amount or a capped bonus pool. They are not a promise of getting three times your losses back. Always read what the base is.
| Offer wording | What it likely means | Ask yourself |
|---|---|---|
| "300% Rakeback up to $15,000" | A boosted rakeback or bonus structure with a cap (500Casino, code CSMAX) | What do I need to wager to unlock it? |
| "15% Rakeback for 7 Days" | A time-limited rakeback rate (Gamdom, code 15BOOST) | What happens after day 7? |
| "1080% Deposit + 340% Rakeback" | Multiple bonuses spread across several deposits (BC.Game) | Is it split across 4 deposits, and with what terms? |
| "Unlock Rakeback" | Rakeback activated through a code (Stake, code GETRAKEBACK) | What is the tier structure? |
The three common models
1. Percentage of house edge
The cleanest model. The site calculates the expected house profit on your bets and returns a share. Heavier-edge games return more; low-edge games return less.
2. Percentage of wagers
Some programs pay a flat fraction of total wagered, for example 0.5% of every bet. This favours high-volume play, and the same percentage applies to every game, regardless of edge.
3. Percentage of net losses (cashback)
You get a share of what you lost over a period. It is easy to understand but only pays if you lose.
| Model | Based on | Pays when you win? | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| House-edge share | Expected house profit | Yes | Regular players |
| Wager share | Total wagered | Yes | High-volume players |
| Net-loss cashback | Actual losses | No | Casual players |
Worked example: how much is it worth?
Suppose you wager CA$2,000 in a month on a game with a 4% edge, and your rakeback is 15% of the house edge.
- Expected house take: CA$2,000 x 4% = CA$80.
- Rakeback: CA$80 x 15% = CA$12.
- Your expected loss falls from CA$80 to CA$68.
That is helpful, but you are still expected to lose money. Rakeback is a discount, not a win. The effective house edge after rakeback is 4% x (1 - 0.15) = 3.4%.
Wagering requirements: the catch
Rakeback paid as a bonus balance may require you to wager it a set number of times before you can withdraw. If a bonus must be turned over 10 times and you get CA$12, you need to wager CA$120 more, which at a 4% edge costs about CA$4.80 in expected loss. Use the wagering calculator to estimate this.
How to evaluate any rakeback offer
- Base: is it applied to edge, wager or losses?
- Cap: is there a maximum payout?
- Timing: instant, daily, weekly or monthly?
- Wagering: is the payout withdrawable straight away?
- Games counted: do low-edge games contribute less?
- VIP tiers: does the rate rise as you wager more, and what does it cost to climb?
Examples from the sites we cover
500Casino leans heavily on rakeback and is explained in 500Casino rakeback explained. Gamdom pairs a 7-day boost with a deposit bonus.
For a crypto-focused comparison, see BC.Game vs Stake.
Rule of thumb: never increase your betting to "earn" more rakeback. If you wager an extra CA$1,000 at a 4% edge to get CA$6 back, you have still lost about CA$34 in expectation.
Rakeback and the VIP trap
VIP programs reward volume with better rates. Chasing a tier can push you to wager more than you planned. Decide your monthly budget first and ignore tier progress bars when they encourage overspending. See bankroll management for a sensible approach.
Canadian angle
Recreational gambling winnings are generally not taxable in Canada, and rakeback is typically treated as a rebate on losses rather than income, but rules depend on circumstances, especially if crypto is involved. See our tax guide and consult a professional. This is not tax or legal advice. Offshore sites are not licensed in Ontario.
Rakeback in practice: a month of play
To make this concrete, picture three players who each spend a month on a site with a 10% rakeback on house edge.
| Player | Monthly wagers | Avg. edge | Expected house take | Rakeback (10%) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Casual | CA$300 | 4% | CA$12 | CA$1.20 |
| Regular | CA$3,000 | 4% | CA$120 | CA$12 |
| High volume | CA$30,000 | 4% | CA$1,200 | CA$120 |
The pattern is clear: rakeback only becomes meaningful at high volume, which is exactly when losses are also large. For a casual player it is a rounding error, so do not choose a site on rakeback alone.
Myths about rakeback
- "Rakeback means I cannot lose." You can and will lose; rakeback only reduces the average loss.
- "A bigger percentage always means more money." Not if the base is different or the cap is low.
- "Low-edge games earn more." Typically the opposite: rakeback tied to the edge pays less on low-edge games.
- "Rakeback is the same as a bonus." Rakeback is ongoing and tied to play; a bonus is usually a one-time grant with wagering conditions.
A short checklist before you claim
- Write down what you plan to wager this month.
- Estimate the expected cost using the average house edge.
- Subtract the rakeback to see the net expected cost.
- Ask whether you would still play if rakeback did not exist.
If the honest answer to the last question is no, the rakeback is nudging you to gamble more than you would otherwise, and that defeats the point.
Frequently asked questions
What is rakeback in simple terms?
Rakeback is a percentage of the house's built-in edge on your bets that the site returns to you as a bonus or cashback, regardless of whether you win or lose.
Is rakeback guaranteed profit?
No. It reduces your expected loss but does not remove it. With a 5% edge and 10% rakeback, the effective edge is still 4.5%.
How is rakeback paid?
It varies: instantly, daily, weekly or monthly, and sometimes tiered by VIP level. Check the terms for each site.
Which sites offer rakeback?
500Casino, Gamdom, BC.Game, Stake and Rainbet all advertise rakeback programs, with different structures.
How can I estimate my rakeback?
Multiply your total wagers by the game's house edge and then by the rakeback percentage. Our calculator does this for you.
